A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.
Cirque Kalabante does just what it says on the tin, it is an African themed circus show. There are acrobatics, contortionists, tribal music and much more.

The set is an African fish market and is carefully utilised to show off the various acts. The costumes are a mixture of traditional African outfits with all the gorgeous colours and attractive patterns that come with that, mixed with some sensible dress such a lycra shorts for such exercises as are part of the show.

There are other “Western influences” such a an electric guitar and a set that was reminiscent of The Full Monty with hard hats, head torches and some sexy hip moves. The performers did not take things too seriously, especially for this number, and the comedy aspect relieved the gasps and tension of some of the gymnastics!

Yamoussa Bangoura plays the host of the evening playing his fantastic Kora and singing the amazing tribal songs. He remains topless throughout with a glistening torso of sheer muscles. All the performers are very fit, although the main contortionist had the lady next to me, who is a physiotherapist, very worried about his joints in later life! His actual was really breathtaking when he went from being a fish in a net to the most wiggly and folded up person I have ever seen. I know I exclaimed “oh jeepers” on several occasions! Somehow I could not stop watching though.

The whole show was magical and enthralling, although I would have liked less of the electric guitar and more of their amazing range of drums personally. On all week and well worth seeing!
