Have you ever driven home from a concert and thought: that was a historic moment?!  It happened to me last night, not because they will be teaching about it in schools, and not because it was a massive moment in musical history, but just because it meant a lot to everyone in the room.  We were each there for a reason, not just because our mates were going or because of the hype around the band, but because we truly wanted to be there.   It was unfortunately the last concert that Bliss will perform, but they truly made it a night to remember for their families and fans.

The Velvet Room were the support for the evening, and did a great job of getting the room jumping with their lively rock tunes and amazing banter from James the lead singer.  They played my favourite song Load Your Own Gun.  I saw them support Dubinski in Drummonds back in May and have been a little bit obsessed with them since that concert.  Aneta Maeso (https://www.instagram.com/caught_daylight) was recording video footage for their recent single Pinocchio that evening and it has been fun following them on social media. They are really great guys as well as being talented musicians and I hope to see them again soon.

This was the first time Bliss have performed in three and a half years and they weren’t shy in admitting such. The lead singer Rhuaridh explained partway through the set that the evening was inspired when his dad was in hospital and expressed regret that he might not see his boy perform his favorite song again. The comment had stayed with Rhuaridh and inspired him to organise the evening we were all enjoying.

It was justifiably an unusual concert, the original line up was no longer available so we had a drummer playing his first ever concert and guitar players from The Capollos and Hitlist.  They played 10 songs as Bliss used to, including the wonderful songs: Cry Your Eyes Out, Glitter and Gold and Filthy Animals.

As the last song approached Rhuaridh told us that that was the end and there would no more and not to call for any more songs.  Once Silhouette ended we started chanting “one more song” and Rhuaridh returned to the stage (did he even leave?!). He  announced that he was doing five more songs, but with his brother playing guitar.  They started with the Beatles classic Helter Skelter and went on to Bowie’s Rebel Rebel.  Next was a song that a certain gentleman had been asking for Bliss to play for years and they always said no, but we were treated to Stereophonic’s Dakota dedicated to him.

It may have been the end of an era, but it was also a crowd pleaser. The atmosphere in the room was amazing and the scenes at the end were emotional.  There was a lot of hugging, and those memories will live forever – and that is all that music asks of us.
