A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.
Country Roads is an entertainers production, which I’ve actually reviewed before: https://stupidgirlno1.wordpress.com/2024/06/08/review-country-roads/. I was intrigued to see if it was any different two years later. The production was the same high standard with good lighting and sound quality, except a small issue with one microphone which was quickly replaced. The musicians were very talented and the singers were good representations of those they were covering.

As with last time we had tribute singers for Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers and Johnny Cash. They were accompanied by the young and pretty Amber Jackson and the authentic American “hill billy” Dave Connolly. All had fantastic voices and covered a good range of classic Country songs.

The costumes were different as I remember, Dolly went from a shiny silver jump suit to a pretty yellow dress and Amber started in denim with silver shimmery fringing and later had a short dress that showed off her slender legs beautifully. The gents were also dressed appropriately, Johnny started in monochrome and ended in a proper cowboy style black shirt with red design. I certainly was not the only audience member in cowboy boots, some also sported Stetsons, some more traditional and some of the pink and fluffy type!

Many of the songs were the same, and Johnny’s jokes were the same as last time too and just as cheesy as last time. Of course Ken Campbell has to like soup, and Ring of Fire has to follow a curry in Wetherspoons!!

For fans of county music this show is a feel good, sing along, revisiting many of the songs we know and love. Funnily enough I had seen another Dolly tribute earlier in the week at Castle Fraser’s Skotoberfest and I would say she was more authentic in looks and sound. She only had a recorded male vocal though and nothing beats a Dolly and Kenny duet for Islands in the Stream. We all left with a spring in our step and a smile on our lips. Many people were commenting how good the show was or how much they had enjoyed it, and that is what we go to see shows for. It was a perfect escape from real life and a taste of Nashville in our own town without having to travel all that way!
