Gary Meikle at the Music Hall, Aberdeen

A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.

This is not my first time reviewing Gary Meikle (https://www.5d-blog.com/gary-meikle-2-5-at-music-hall-aberdeen/) and it is actually my fourth time seeing him perform live, the first having been at Breakneck Comedy where he got his big break.

Tonight’s support was a local chap, Aiden Cowie “with one i”, or is that one eye?  Although it is always uncomfortable when someone takes the mickey of their own appearance he then explained what got him to that introduction to himself. At 18 he was diagnosed with a rare form of facial cancer which means that he now only has one eye.  His main material was about going to protect his fertility in case the treatment affected it, something that he still does not know if he will need in the future or not.

Aiden was there with his girlfriend so fingers crossed for them.  Next week he celebrates seven years clean of cancer and that certainly got a huge round of applause, as we all become quite attached to the young man during his act.  Next May Aiden will be performing headline shows at Breakneck Comedy and I expect a good proportion of this audience will follow him.  There are tickets still available (https://www.breakneckcomedy.co.uk/product/aiden-cowie).

As he left the stage Gary came on and told us about their birthday antics for Aiden the night before, which involved a gift of a monocle.  Gary was confused by the moral decision of whether they should actually give it to him or not, luckily he does have a sense of humour!  Next was the interval before Gary Meikle came on for his main show.  Gary is unusual in that he does meet and greet before, during, and after his show at many of the tour locations.  He is very aware that the fans are what made his career, which started at Breakneck but really kicked off when he put out a ranting video about eyebrows, which I am sure we have all as it went viral.  Following pressure from his followers on social media he now has merchandise available with the eyebrows – as well as calendars featuring himself!

Gary Meikle continues to be incredibly funny, but his journey has changed since finding fame.  For example his daughter and granddaughter no longer live with him, as he was able to buy them a house next door so now they all have some privacy.  His material is generally about his own personal experiences, much of it based around the bedroom.  His humour would not suit everybody but if you find really sex and poo funny, this is the show for you!  This particular tour is also educational and I am sure anyone who has heard it will have a cleaner bum hole after his very informative instructions!

His love of his gorgeous wee granddaughter Gracie shines through whenever he speaks about her, but thank goodness we were not in Turkey with them when he treated her to a trip over there.  He loves to travel and mentions Thailand and its inhabitants in another of his hilarious stories.  You really do not want to miss this tour for your own health and wellbeing!
