A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.
Fresh from Sunderland, come an exciting new indie rock band called Ryder. They are diving straight into the limelight with an album and single both being released on 28th November, on Flip Flop records. I was very excited to get a listen ahead of time and am happy to report they are totally worth checking out! The single, Broken Footsteps, features Zak Starkey on drums; not only is he the son of Ringo Starr but he has played with The Who and many others. However the rest of the album is brilliant too, without the weight of such a renowned drummer.

Only The Brave is the name of the album and features many “banging tunes” with a fabulous energy and some great lyrics. Phil Hughes is the drummer for the album and can be heard throughout, I do love strong drum beats. Listening to the whole album in the car it was hard to believe this was not a well established band with years of experience behind them. I have listened to it a couple of times now and am already singing along, especially to the lyric “dance in the northern lights” from the 4th song – Northern Lights. Of course my lights in Aberdeenshire are rather more northern than the ones David Cuthbertson is singing about down in Sunderland! Hopefully they will tour up this way soon though as they will fit right into our local music scene, and I would love to experience this band live.

Dave Lowton plays bass, with Des Clarke and Steven Dorward on guitar and backing vocals. These five talented musicians come together as Ryder without effort, eased by their marvellous management by Kyle Dale of Bittersweet Home. The album was produced by Nick Brine and recorded at Rockfield Studios. Even the artwork for this album is special, coming from Gareth Halliday, known for his work for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. This connection is not the only aura of Oasis around the band, and their fresh new sound is probably most timely as the hype of this summer’s Oasis comeback dies down.
