Sister Act at His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen on Monday 7th November 2022

A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.

A musical version of the 80s movie with Whoopi Goldberg, who is involved with this stage production.  The stars of the show are Lesley Joseph playing Mother Superior and Sandra Marvin taking Whoopi’s role as Deloris Van Cartier.  It’s hard to believe that the Birds of a Feather star is now in her 70s, her tiny presence on the stage brings a big persona and she can sure belt out a tune!

*

Graham MacDuff rather steals the show as Eddie Souther, the policeman trying to keep Deloris safe from her murdering gangster boyfriend.  The scene when he transforms from “Steady Eddie” into a singing sensation…well let’s say no more to avoid spoilers but it is breath taking and glorious!  Another star is Sister Mary Robert played by Lizzie Bea who grows from a quiet obedient nun into a confident young woman who can really rock some FM boots!  All the nuns are fabulous in their own wee ways, each having a very different character within their cover all habits.  The Casting Director Stuart Burt did a wonderful job.

In fact, everyone does a wonderful job in this production: the staging that changes from police station to nunnery to nightclub, the talented orchestra without whom a musical could not be musical, the choreographer who has everyone moving together so beautifully even as they go from scene to scene.

There’s some fabulous songs and no one could help getting caught up in the ups and downs of Deloris as she finds her place in the world and flourishes as a singer, making some very special friends along the way.

The show is in Aberdeen all week, before heading south to Glasgow and beyond, and you don’t want to miss it!
