Cthulhu by Gaslight: Keeper’s Guide from Chaosium.Inc is without doubt a beautifully-crafted expansion to the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game, this to me offering a richly atmospheric take on Victorian England. The guide succeeds in transporting Keepers and players to a fog-shrouded era of gas lamps, occult intrigue, and creeping dread. The historical detail is impressively immersive without becoming overbearing, and the setting feels both authentic and ripe for cosmic horror.

The book shines in its coverage of period-specific topics—social norms, law enforcement, technology, and occult practices—all of which help build a believable 1890s London. There’s also a solid selection of new character options, adversaries, and narrative hooks, making it a valuable toolkit for Keepers seeking to move beyond the 1920s.

That said, the guide occasionally leans more toward background than actionable content. Some Keepers may wish for more concrete scenarios or a tighter focus on how to weave Mythos horror directly into the historical tapestry. Still, the material offered is rich and inspiring, and with a bit of effort, can easily be molded into memorable campaigns.

Cthulhu by Gaslight: Keeper’s Guide is a thoughtful and evocative supplement. Certainly, it’s a strong choice for those drawn to the shadows of Victorian horror with a Lovecraftian twist.
