Sometimes a website needs to stop, take a breath, and ask itself a simple question: what do we actually want to be?
Over the years, 5D Pop Culture has grown from a place to share news, reviews and thoughts about the things we love into something much broader — built around gaming, roleplaying, film, television, comics, horror, science fiction and all the wonderful corners of popular culture that have shaped our lives.
So, we’re taking 5D in a new direction.
Welcome to 5D Pop Culture — The Forever Geek.
Why the change?
The world of pop culture has changed enormously since many of us first discovered it.
For some of us, gaming began in arcades, on a ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari, Mega Drive or one of the early home consoles. Our first encounters with fantasy and science fiction might have come through a video tape, a Saturday afternoon at the cinema, a comic bought from the local newsagent or a battered paperback discovered in a second-hand bookshop.
Some of us rolled our first D20s long before anyone had heard of an actual-play podcast. We painted miniatures before there were YouTube tutorials for doing it. We discovered horror films before streaming services could recommend the next one. We queued for games, bought magazines to find out what was coming next and probably spent far too much money in arcades.
For me personally, 9 years old in the late 1970’s being read the The Hobbit by a teacher at school, 10 years old discovering horror in the form or late-night Universal films……11 years old witnessing the release of Star Wars and seeing the arrival of 2000AD comic…..the list goes on.
And yet, here we are…..We’re still playing…..We’re still watching…..We’re still reading…..We’re still collecting…..We’re still rolling dice. We’re still arguing about which film, video game, Table Top game, Doctor Who actor, Star Wars movie or comic is the best.
(For the record, Dying on hill time: Best film – The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Best Video Game – Baldur’s Gate 3, Best TTRPG – Delta Green, Best Doctor Who – Tom Baker, Best Star Wars movie – Rogue One, Best Comic – 2000AD. Come at me if you dare.
And that’s the point. because I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been asked questions like “You still play video games?!”, “Are you ever going to grow out of buying comics?!” etc etc. Holy moly people, Being a geek doesn’t have an expiry date!
The Forever Geek
The Forever Geek isn’t really about age. Because while nostalgia is a big part of what we do, we don’t want 5D to become a museum.
We’re not interested in simply saying that “Everything was better when I was younger.” From a personal point of view sometimes it was, but lordy, often it absolutely was not. So, no rose-tinted glasses here.
Instead, we want to look at THEN, NOW and NEXT.
THEN
The games, films, television shows, comics, books, technology and experiences that shaped us.
NOW
The things we’re watching, playing, reading and talking about today.
NEXT
The ideas, technology, games, stories and creators that are shaping where pop culture goes from here. So hopefully, it’s that combination that will hopefully make 5D different……..or at least, interesting.
We’re not looking backwards. We’re looking back while moving forward…….but not while we’re driving, because that would be stupid and dangerous……
What will you find at 5D?
The core of 5D isn’t changing — if anything, we’re giving it a clearer sense of purpose.
You’ll still find the reviews, interviews, features, news and opinions you’ve come to expect, but they’ll now sit within a much more defined 5D universe.
🎲 Roleplaying & Tabletop Gaming
Dungeons & Dragons, Call of Cthulhu, Delta Green, Warhammer, Pathfinder and all the other games that have kept us around the table for decades.
We’ll look at new releases, classic games, adventures, campaigns, supplements, miniatures and the experiences that make tabletop gaming such a wonderfully social hobby.
🎮 Video Games & Retro Gaming
Modern gaming alongside the games that got us started.
From the arcade to the latest console or gaming PC, we’ll explore the technology, games and experiences that make gaming such an enduring part of pop culture.
This is where Press Start Again comes in — celebrating gaming then and now, without pretending you have to choose between the two.
🎬 Film & Television
New releases, old favourites, horror, science fiction, fantasy, cult classics and the occasional film that we really should have watched years ago.
We’ll ask an important question along the way………Does it still hold up?
📚 Comics
From the characters and stories that introduced generations of readers to superheroes, horror and science fiction through to the latest releases and independent creators. Because comics aren’t just something we grew up with. They’re still evolving.
👾 Geek Culture
Collecting, conventions, technology, gaming hardware, books, toys, music, creators and all the wonderfully strange things that make up the world of geek culture.
If it makes you say: “Oh, I remember that!” or: “I absolutely need one of those.” there’s a good chance it belongs here.
The 5D Review
We’re also going to put an increasing emphasis on something that has always mattered to us:
Is it actually worth your time and money?
Whether it’s a game, RPG, piece of gaming hardware, book, film, collectible or something completely unexpected, our reviews will focus on the experience rather than simply repeating a list of specifications.
What’s it like to actually use?
Who is it for?
What does it do well?
What doesn’t it do well?
And, ultimately: Would we spend our own money on it?
We’re geeks, but we’re also consumers. And when you’re spending your hard-earned money on a hobby you love, you want someone to give you an honest opinion.
A Community, Not Just a Website
Hopefully this doesn’t sound too cringy and syrupy, but change isn’t simply about the website.
5D Pop Culture is becoming a wider community across the website, YouTube, Facebook and other social platforms.
We want to hear from you……..What was the first game you played?…..What was the first RPG you ever owned?…..Which film have you watched more times than you care to admit?…..What comic introduced you to superheroes?…..Which piece of technology made you think you’d finally arrived in the future?…..What’s sitting on your gaming shelf right now?
And perhaps most importantly………What are you enjoying today?
We want to celebrate the memories and discover what’s next.
We’re Still Geeks
There can sometimes be an assumption that gaming, roleplaying, comics and geek culture are primarily the territory of younger generations. Even just today, I’ve seen three separate posts on Reddit asking younger geeks whether they’re too old for gaming, roleplaying etc.
Perhaps that’s because those generations have grown up with them. But many of us were there when some of these things were getting started. We watched gaming develop from arcades and home computers into a global entertainment industry.
We watched tabletop RPGs evolve from photocopied character sheets and enormous rulebooks into one of the most popular forms of collaborative storytelling in the world. We watched science fiction, fantasy, horror and comic-book culture move from the fringes of popular culture into the mainstream. And we were there to help make geek culture what it is today.
But this isn’t about claiming ownership. Quite the opposite. The best thing about geek culture is that it keeps being passed on. Parents introduce games to their children. Players introduce new people to RPGs. Someone discovers a forty-year-old film and falls completely in love with it. A teenager picks up a comic because their parent recommended it. A new generation discovers an old game and wonders why we ever thought it was difficult.
And suddenly the cycle starts again.
And that’s why we’re calling this: The Forever Geek. Because the point isn’t how old you are.
So, What’s Next?
Over the coming months you’ll see 5D develop further, with new video series, features, reviews, interviews, retrospectives and community content.
You’ll see more gaming……More RPGs…..More film and television……..More comics……More nostalgia………More looking to the future……More technology……More conversations.
And hopefully, more opportunities for you to get involved. Because 5D Pop Culture isn’t about telling you what you should like. it’s about celebrating the things we love, discovering new things together and occasionally having a very good-natured argument about them. After all, what’s the point of being a geek if you can’t have an unnecessarily passionate opinion about something completely insignificant?
So whether you’ve been part of 5D for years or you’ve just discovered us, welcome.
