Last night the people of Aberdeen braved the wrath of storm Eowyn and headed to the Music Hall to enjoy A Country Night in Nashville. The show, featuring Dominic Halpin and the Hurricanes, was a delightful taster of the country scene with music from legends of the genre alongside more modern acts and even a couple of original pieces written by members of the band.

With the recent upsurge in popularity in country music it was no surprise to find the venue nearly full. The audience was a mix of those who may have remembered some of the songs original releases along with a number of sparkly and fluffy cowboy hats crowning the ‘young team’.

The set list featured songs from iconic artists such as Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, George Strait and a touching tribute to the recently lost Kris Kristoffersen which got everyone singing along. There were also more recent additions from the likes of Lady A, The Chicks and Taylor Swift. All the favourite sing alongs were included; Country Road, 9 to 5 and Shania Twain’s iconic Man, I Feel Like a Woman which got all the audience on their feet.

A particular highlight of the night was a rendition of Alan Jackson’s It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere that featured some audience members enjoying a round of the Gay Gordons (Scottish country dance for those not in the know!) by the stage. The band enjoyed that as much as we did!

As a fan of country music I very much enjoyed the show and the mix of songs performed. The band were technically very talented and gave the impression they were enjoying the performance and interacted with the crowd throughout. Their website has a long list of future tour dates all over the UK and I recommend polishing your dancing boots and checking them out at a venue near you.
