Comic Con Scotland Aberdeen: So long 2024 Hello 2025!

A few personal recollections of Comic Con Scotland Aberdeen 2024

*

Last weekend, P&J Live in Aberdeen became the epicentre of excitement as fans of film, TV, and comics flocked from across the north-east and beyond to attend the latest edition of Comic Con Scotland (NE). This eagerly anticipated event marked the largest gathering yet, drawing enthusiasts from near and far to immerse themselves in a celebration of all things pop culture.

Exploring the Vendor Hall: A Treasure Trove of Goodies

No Comic Con experience would be complete without a stroll through the vendor hall, and Comic Con Scotland Aberdeen did not disappoint. We took advantage of our role as very important press type people to get to the event just as the doors were opening and managed to take in a good many of the stalls and attractions before the army of fellow nerds and geeks made their way in. From rare collectibles to handmade crafts, there was something for every type of fan. I may have splurged on a few too many 3D printed fantasy figures for me to paint in my nerd attic, but hey, can you ever have too many?

The guests

One of the major highlights of this year’s Comic Con Scotland Aberdeen was always going to be the opportunity to meet some of my favourite pop culture figures up close and personal. Now, while that previous sentence may read a little more creepy and stalky than originally intended, here are some of the unforgettable encounters for this here nerd;

As soon as I heard that the talented Karen Gillan would be gracing the convention floor, I knew I had to snag a photo op. Meeting her was a delight, and she was every bit as delightful as I imagined……. Even putting up with my gushing appraisal of her role as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy. Yes, it will come as no surprise to those who know me well that ‘professional press person’ was ever so quickly replaced by embarrassing fanboy who is old enough to know better’. However she was lovely and polite.

The magical atmosphere was palpable as we observed fans in meeting the charismatic cast of Charmed, Shannon Doherty, Rose McGowan & Holly Marie Combs. From sharing stories about their time on set to posing for selfies, interacting with these enchanting stars was an experience my 5D press colleague will never forget.

Panel Discussions and Q&A Sessions

Comic Con Scotland Aberdeen wasn’t just about distant and close-up guest sightings—it was also a chance to gain valuable insights from these industry insiders. Here are just a couple of the panel discussions and Q&A sessions that left a lasting impression……and not just talking about the inimitable & incredible host, SoCalVal!

Listening to Bernard Hill share anecdotes from his illustrious career was a true privilege. From tales of his time on The Lord of the Rings to behind-the-scenes insights from his plethora of other works, Hill’s panel was a masterclass in storytelling. It was also rather emotional in parts, particularly his recollections of the reunion some time later with some of the LOTR cast. If ever there was a genuine show of the emotional connection cast members can have in certain productions, this was it. He had tears, I had tears…..many of us had tears. Beautiful.

Khary Payton and Ross Marquand are quite simply a bone fide comedy act. The Walking Dead is a long-standing comic book and TV obsession of mine, so attending Khary Payton and Ross Marquand’s panel offered fascinating glimpses into the world of walkers and voiceover performance. Plus, their infectious energy had the whole crowd laughing and cheering along as they delighted both Walking Dead & Voice acting aficionados alike. I shall remember for a very long time Ross’s delight in discovering Irn Bru and their shared new found love of discovering Whisky!

Monopoly Events: The Magic Behind the Scenes

Behind every great convention is a team of dedicated organisers, and Monopoly Events genuinely outdid themselves with Comic Con Scotland Aberdeen. From impressive logistics to top-notch guest appearances, it’s clear that they’re passionate about creating unforgettable experiences for fans. The move to the larger main area of the P&J Live has certainly worked and further improved on already fine recent years.
