Pantomime is a uniquely British festive tradition with venues all over the country showing a variety of fairy tales in slapstick form with local embellishments. This year is no different and the Aberdeen Arts Centre are currently entertaining audiences with a Doric filled performance of Dick Whittington.

While this TaleGate Theatre Productions pantomime may lack the budget and celebrity names of larger venues, it does not lack in enthusiasm and entertainment. In fact, if you want to laugh almost non-stop for two hours then I recommend getting along to a performance to watch Dick and his feline bestie Tommy in their battle against the evil Rat Queen for the streets of Aberdonia. They are joined in this adventure by local quine Alice, her mother/panto dame Sally Fitz-Mackie and the ever sparkly fairy Mither Kirk. There is also a chorus line of young dancers who did a wonderful job as the show ventured from the rough streets of Glasgow to the Golden Shores of Aberdonia and finally onto the high seas aboard the eagerly anticipated Tall Ships.

Your panto bingo card is suitably filled with all the usual expectations; audience participation, booing the villain, calls of ‘he’s behind you’ and an ice-cream tub of innuendo to keep the older audience members chuckling while avoiding inquisitive glances from their kids! Particularly memorable moments involved a giant doo (pigeon for the non Doric speakers) and some caber tossing! – Not to mention Sally’s highly entertaining wardrobe which tried hard to steal the show.

Overall, Dick Whittington did not disappoint for a fun, festive evening out that all the family could enjoy. It as announced at the finale that next year’s edition will be Robin Hood, a personal favourite I’m already looking forward to experiencing with an Aberdonian twist.
