GLOK aka Andy Bell and Innerstrings at The Tunnels, Aberdeen

Following on from interviewing Andy Bell himself: https://5d-blog.com/interview-with-musician-andy-bell/ Maria attended his GLOK experience in Aberdeen.

Unsure of exactly what to expect from this concert I went along with an open mind; and was very pleased to find it was very enjoyable experience just I had suspected!  This connotation of Andy’s music shows how talented he is with a guitar, as well as with his feet!  As mentioned in the interview I did with Andy he has a “space station” of foot pedals and twiddly knobs which he spends some time adjusting to get the noise that he wants.  I do not know how he remembers what they all do and what setting each should be at but it was a wonderful outcome.

Innerstrings provide visuals to accompany the resulting sounds.  I did wonder if this takes away from the music or if its aimed to adjust your view from just staring at Andy, which must be quite unnerving when you’re standing in front of a roomful of people!  The combination did work well together, you get lost in the pulsing beats and swirly images on screen.  It was quite an immersive experience, I found myself lost just watching the light streams coming out of the projector itself.

The set included various songs from the different albums that GLOK has already produced.  Some of these songs seemed rather long whilst some of them were shorter.  One was called Entanglement and the recorded version has lyrics by someone called Chloe, for the live version Andy sang along with it, providing the vocals.  Another song was introduced as being about getting over a hangover, Day Three.  We also had Exit Through The Skylight and a new GLOK song that is upcoming that I failed to catch the name of but it was something like The Institute of Magic and Light – and was well worth watching out for when it does come out!

At the end Andy made himself available at the merch stall and was happy to sign things and pose with his fans, chatting casually with everyone and meeting “new people” as he said in his interview that he was looking forward to doing on tour.

The tour is ongoing, although by the time this is published he will have headed south with the Scottish leg behind him.  Certainly worth checking out if he is coming near you though for a unique experience of an evening.
