Apple has finally gone foldable – and this bona fide Apple fanboy has mixed feelings.
Well… they finally did it. Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo at yesterday’s Apple Event, bringing the company’s first foldable iPhone into the world. And as someone who has been a bona fide Apple fanboy for rather longer than I care to admit, I have to say I’m excited.
Very excited. But I’m also slightly trepidatious.
The iPhone Duo is certainly an impressive piece of kit from the images I’ve seen. Open it up and you get a rather lovely 7.6-inch folding display, while the outside features a 5.4-inch display. It is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, includes a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system and brings a whole host of new iOS experiences designed around the foldable form factor.
And then there’s the small matter of the price. The iPhone Duo starts at £1,999 for 256GB in the UK. Yes. £1,999. For a phone……. I really hope my wife isn’t reading this……..
Now, I’m an Apple fan. I love the ecosystem, I love the design and I’m genuinely intrigued by what Apple has done with the Duo. But even this Forever Geek has to stop for a moment and ask the difficult question:
Do I actually need one… or do I just really, really want one?
And, if I’m being completely honest, there’s another question:
Can I justify spending £1,999 on a phone without my bank account, or more like, my wife, staging an intervention?
The Duo certainly looks like the sort of device that could change how we use our phones. The large folding display has obvious potential for gaming, watching films and TV, multitasking and, naturally, generally making us feel like we’re living in the future. But whether that future is worth two grand remains to be seen.
Pre-orders open on 16 October, with the iPhone Duo going on sale from 23 October.
I’ll certainly be watching with interest. And possibly checking behind the sofa for loose change.
