The MCDM RPG Crowd Funding smashes past its target.

Full Disclosure: Nor I, or anyone else affiliated with the 5D Pop Culture Website have received any free content, payment or other forms of renumeration from the creators of the subject of this press release. No promises were made of financial remuneration, free gifts or holidays in the sunny Bahamas in exchange for our inclusion…….sadly.
The content below is quite simply something in the world of TTRPG that caught our geeky eye and so we wanted to share with the community. If you love it, well, fab. If you don’t, well that’s your prerogative too…..

Whether you’re a group of local heroes sent to investigate mysterious goings-on in the nearby haunted wood, or famous mercenaries plotting and scheming in the big city, the MCDM RPG makes building adventures and fighting monsters fun.”….
A bold claim perhaps? Well not if the initial success of the crowdfunding launch is anything to go by as the target of $800,000  has been well and truly obliterated. At the time of writing this (Sat Dec 9th, 1pm UK time) the total sits at $2,587,043 with still 27 days left for the campaign. For those of you (us) who find maths challenging, that’s over $2.5 million in less than 2 days.

MCDM Productions, formerly known for crafting popular third-party Dungeons & Dragons supplements, is now venturing into independent territory. Founded in 2018 by Matt Colville, the studio’s upcoming project, tentatively named the MCDM RPG, went live on BackerKit on Dec. 7. While a formal title will be decided later, backers can anticipate delivery by the first half of 2025.

*

Wait, what was that? You are not sure just who Matt Colville is? Alright, buckle up, because Matt Colville is basically the Gandalf of TTRPG advice on YouTube, and here’s why he’s a genius. A couple of years ago when I was reconnecting with my previous love of role playing, I needed a source to advise and inform me about, well, everything.
I was given his name and YouTube channel to help me dive back into the deliciously chaotic world of tabletop gaming, and Colville’s videos are like the GPS for your campaign. This dude doesn’t just talk game mechanics; he transforms complex stuff into bite-sized nuggets that even a mimic couldn’t chew on. His videos aren’t a snoozefest; they’re like a shot of espresso for your campaign creativity.

*

What’s epic is how he turns the Dungeon Master into a storytelling maestro. It’s not just about rolling dice; it’s about crafting a tale that’d make even dragons shed a tear. And guess what? He spills his own gaming blunders, making you feel like a hero even when you mess up.
But here’s the real magic: he’s not just a wise sage; he’s the bard of TTRPG camaraderie. His love for the community is infectious. You’re not just watching a video; you’re joining a fellowship of nerds who share the same passion.

In this Fantasy RPG, characters kick off their journey at level 1, already recognized as local heroes. The narrative possibilities are broad, from meeting in a tavern to jumping straight into the action. Whether you’re a group of local heroes investigating mysterious events or renowned mercenaries navigating city intrigue, the MCDM RPG prioritizes enjoyable adventure-building and monster combat.

Combat in this game is dynamic and action-oriented, featuring heroes and monsters with abilities that can propel opponents into walls or each other. Each hero possesses a set of thematic abilities used every round, and resources accumulate during play, ensuring escalating epic battles without tedious slogs.

*

The game mechanics utilize 2d6, supplemented by d4s and d8s. Attack rolls also serve as damage rolls, eliminating the frustration of missed turns or wasted resources on unsuccessful spells.

*

*

The crowdfunding campaign aims to fund two essential books: “Heroes,” a comprehensive rulebook covering character creation, customization, and advancement, and “Monsters,” a monster book containing a variety of creatures and rules for encounter balancing.

*

MCDM emphasizes character customization, promising distinctiveness even among characters of the same class and ancestry. The crowdfunding backers can expect PDFs for both books around June 2025, with a playtest packet potentially available in Q2 2024. The intention is to publish the game under an open license, allowing players to create, share, and publish their original works set in this world using these rules.

*

*

The studio envisions a vibrant community where players not only engage in the game for months but also contribute by crafting, sharing, and even selling their unique creations within this imaginative framework.
