The Ultimate Boyband Party Show at Music Hall, Aberdeen

A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.

My friend turned to me at the end of the first half and said “well that was silly, but fun”.  How right she was!  We all need a break from the humdrum of our normal lives and this show is certainly an energetic way of escaping reality with an exhilarating experience.

One of the band members explained that they all grew up listening to boyband music, and they offered us a deal: that if we let them believe that they were the famous rock stars that they want to be by screaming and clapping for them, they would let us pretend that we were 20 again. My hand was straight up in the air offering a pinky promise on that one, because who would not want to feel young again?!

This show really is the ultimate boyband party, with fabulous production, authentic 90s dance choreography, a setlist of boyband hits, and a wardrobe full of costume changes!  The boys may not be the ones we had on our Athena posters but they are a well manufactured alternative – with the traditional 5 different characters. James reckons he’s the handsome one, Mark was named the baby face, Zen was the rough rocky type, Matt was the tall one and Ethan has a beard. Something for everyone, and there were discussions of “who did you like best” as we all filed out the hall at the end and waited for our photo opportunity with the guys.

The audience started off a little bit restrained, judging the situation, but we were soon on our feet singing along, shrieking at the band and generally living our best lives!  Songs ranged from NSYNC to Westlife to Backstreet Boys to Take That and even the Spice….Boys?! The girls behind us certainly knew the words to every song, and the girls who got to go up on stage for one song all looked thrilled to be there.

If you love a throwback and had a soft spot for any of the boybands of the 90s, this is the show for you. Full of energy and fun, it’s the perfect escape from reality for a few hours!  Aberdeen was the first night the group have performed in Scotland, but the good news is they are touring the UK for the next wee while so it’s not too late to grab tickets and have a great night out!
