Tide Lines – The Town Hall Tour, Inverurie

A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson

This tour of some of the smaller, more intimate venues is supported by Blue Violet.  They are Sam and Sarah Gotley, a married couple whose VW Campervan broke down at St Andrew’s so they’re now in a Volkswagen Corsa, now that’s rock and roll!  Their car issues do not affect their performance though with some lovely songs including Halo, Asylum, Rabbit Hole and Favourite Jeans.  I did feel sorry for them as Sarah tried to engage with the audience, but some people were obviously there for the bar and the main act so just did not stop talking throughout the support, just so rude.  The Blue Violet debut album Late Night Calls came out in April, and they have an EP coming out soon as a wee extra.  I’d recommend checking them out, even if it’s just on Spotify.

The main act burst onto stage with a combination of bright lights and loud noise!  Each got his moment to arrive, to much applause and excitement from the gathered fans who had sold out the town hall.  Robert Robertson is the lead singer and has such an amazing voice and stage presence, captivating the audience.  The band has a truly unique look and sound, such young lads rocking the stage and so adored.  One of my friends called me a “lucky duck” for managing to get tickets for the gig as it had sold out before she got there!

There was a tremendous light show, although actually quite simple, that lit up their performance.  They included all their best known songs as well as some lesser known: Far Side of the World, Let’s Make Tonight, Walking on the Waves and Written in the Scars.  Some of the lyrics just move you so much, then the next song is in Gaelic and you’re transported to the Islands lost in the gorgeous lilt of the language.  Half way through the set Alasdair Turner swapped his electric guitar for bagpipes and everyone was head bopping or foot tapping along.

They may have mentioned, a couple of times, that they are playing the Music Hall in Aberdeen next March and I hope there are lots of lucky ducks that treat themselves to tickets for it as they will not be disappointed.
