1976: Bigfoot

*

It’s the summer of 1976! Gerald Ford is running for re-election, desperately fending off a hard-right challenge from a former actor and California governor, and a relatively unknown peanut farmer from Georgia is surging to victory in the Democratic primary. Director George Lucas is filming an epic fantasy movie set in space with “droids” and a big hairy shambling creature as characters, which many expect to be a flop. America is celebrating its bicentennial, but somehow it seems bittersweet, what with surging gas prices, inflation, and horrible unemployment.

Meanwhile, at a recreational lake in the southern Cascades, there have been occasional sightings of the mythic Sasquatch in the dark forests. Even more concerning, young people have gone missing in the area. Are these strange creatures a threat, or are the darkest events in the area the doing of the world’s most dangerous animal? Put on your platform shoes, get ready to boogie, or light up a joint! Journey back to adventure in the year 1976 and mythic American wilderness.

1976: Bigfoot is a setting for traditional tabletop roleplaying games, set in America’s bicentennial summer of 1976. As an “any-system” resource, it may be partnered with rules for any roleplaying game that includes the modern era in its mechanics. The setting focuses primarily on a particular place, a recreational lake in south-central Washington, where sightings of the mythical Bigfoot and the disappearances of several young people have raised the interest of heroic adventurers. This resource allows several different plot conceptions, ranging from a procedural mystery to a slasher-style horror game.
