Full disclosure: This product was sent to us for an honest and objective review. No promises were made of financial remuneration, free gifts or holidays in the sunny Bahamas in exchange for our review…….sadly.

This week we received a review copy of ‘A War Transformed’ courtesy of the fine people at Osprey Games, and we’re in the midst of exploring it thoroughly. While it’s too early to provide a final assessment of the game itself, we’re eager to discuss its intriguing premise and why it has us enthusiastic about embarking on rule reading and potential figure procurement for an intended play.

A Bewitching Blend of History and the Supernatural! – 5/5 Stars

*

Prepare to be spellbound by ‘A War Transformed,’ a mesmerising occult skirmish wargame that melds the stark reality of the Great War with the haunting echoes of forgotten folklore. In this enchanting clash of history and mysticism, players are thrust into a mesmerising alternate reality where the Moon’s descent heralds the resurgence of magic and long-lost gods awaken from their slumber.

In the midst of the bloodshed and chaos of World War I, ‘A War Transformed’ paints a vivid canvas where the Moon’s fall reshapes the very fabric of the world. Seas shift, revealing new lands, and hidden forces emerge from the shadows. This setting is a masterstroke, seamlessly blending the horrors of war with the mystique of ancient rituals. The imagery of stone circles echoing with incantations and menhirs adorned with offerings is nothing short of captivating.

As the war rages on, ‘A War Transformed’ transports players to the eerie battleground of Doggerland, a bridge between Britain and Europe. Here, the supernatural meets the mundane in a spectacular clash. The description of war machines adorned with totems, and cavalry charging across miraculously verdant plains, is evocative and utterly immersive.

In the aftermath of the world-shattering event, a multitude of peculiar beings now inhabit this transformed realm. Many of these entities can be conjured as allies in the unending conflict known now engulfing the world. Some of my initial favourites are;

Snatchers – Think Goblins but more human in appearances & sized creatures who can sabotage enemy equipment or steal special items

Devourers – think cave-troll. These formidable creatures, larger than a typical human, excel in close-quarters combat, making them formidable opponents.

Crushers we’re talking gigantic beings with expertise not only in eliminating foot soldiers but also in dealing with any manner of armoured vehicles

‘A War Transformed’ promises an exhilarating gameplay experience, perfectly capturing the essence of skirmish warfare in this supernatural world. The combination of fast-paced action and a tense initiative bidding system keeps players on their toes. The inclusion of authentic folk traditions and occult philosophies of the era adds depth and richness to the game, making it a truly unique experience. It’s a game where rifles meet relics, bayonets meet belief, and machine guns meet magic.

I have no hesitation in saying that this rule book seamlessly weaves historical themes with a captivating supernatural narrative. It invites players to step into a world where the line between reality and the arcane blurs, and where the Great War takes on a hauntingly new dimension. If you’re a fan of wargames that push the boundaries of imagination while remaining grounded in history, this is an absolute must-play. ‘A War Transformed’ is a bewitching journey you won’t want to miss!”
