A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.
The Book of Mormon is not everyone’s cup of tea when it comes to musicals; luckily I do not drink tea! Created by the comedy geniuses behind South Park it contains crass humour and lacks any political correctness, as would be expected.

Last time it came to Aberdeen my husband and I rushed to buy tickets as we had been enjoying the soundtrack. We had a lengthy discussion about whether to take our son and decided he was too young. A decision which was affirmed within the first ten minutes of the show! We had loved it though and he is now approaching 16 so this time I took him.

I was surprised to find he was not screaming with laughter at it and am now wondering if my parental guidance that “swearing is not big or clever” was too effective. Perhaps the younger generation has achieved a more caring and inclusive attitude, as he seemed to find giving God the finger rather poor taste. Unlike the older lady sat near us who sounded like she needed Tena Lady!

The production behind the Book of Mormon is certainly not a cheap joke, this is a very professional and well presented show. The sets and costumes are glorious and the actors are fantastic.

Adam Bailey and Sam Glen marvellously play the roles of the two trainee Elders starting their two year traineeship as a Mormon, trying to bring people into the religion. They are sent to Africa and the plot follows their attempts to prove themselves to God and convert the local people – without getting killed by the local gang leader Butt F***ing Nakid. Apparently that’s his name as that is how he likes to kill people.

My favourite scene was definitely the Mormon Hell Dream sequence when several well known and very appropriate characters make an appearance, but you will need to see it to find out who!

If you like a naughty giggle and do not take things too seriously then this could certainly be the belly laugh you need, but the explicit language warning is well earned so if that will offend you perhaps give it a miss. Just wondering what excuse I can find to see it a third time!
