A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.

This concert is the first night of Callum’s new tour and a great chance for the Pistol Daisies to support him in front of a sold out Music Hall. They put on a really good set, two girls playing guitar and singing with a male drummer. They had a lovely stage presence and some good banter. Apparently they nearly split up recently but made the decision to stay together, which seems sensible as they play very well together. A particularly notable song was funeral song about friendship, well worth a listen. They also performed their single Saint Glasgow which came out in November and is about the city they come from.

When Callum Beattie’s band came onto the stage they were each carrying a light which they put in front of their instrument or microphone stand, Callum came on last to huge cheers from his adoring crowd. This is a man who is not only a talented musician (I once even paid to see him instead of requesting a review pass as I so often do!) but he also values his fanbase. He will do meet and greet, he does sometimes respond on social media – or his manager Dave Rogers will. They care, and recognise that musicians need an audience, there was a lot of love in the room last night! They also get involved in charity work, raising money and awareness for Steps To Hope. They are also setting up a new charity to support children in need at Christmas time.

His set included all the hits that we love like Salamander Street, Don’t Walk Alone and Heart Stops Beating. He played Bonfires from his first album, after explaining that it is quite hard for him to play his earlier material as the music industry had not been kind to him, but he kept on fighting. Later Callum explained that his new album is all about the difficult and lonely search for love and he played Pins and Needles. He had lit Chinese lanterns to let all of his troubles float away up into the sky on, and we all watched the float up to the roof of the Music Hall. One seemed to want to stay low and the audience, rather than grabbing it as a souvenir, helped it find the way up. It was really quite touching to watch and I certainly was not the only one who suffered Something In My Eye.

When the time came for the band to leave the stage they each took their light with them. I loved this light theme through the concert, music is often the light that we need to help us through the troubles of life and Callum Beattie is certainly someone who brightens the world around him.
