Country Roads at the Music Hall, Aberdeen.

This country music production by Entertainers is advertised as including all the well-known country songs such as: 9 to 5, The Gambler, Walk the Line, Ring of Fire, King of the Road, Crazy, Rhinestone Cowboy, Jolene, and Dance the Night Away.  It is a worry with such tribute or cover band type events that it will just be like a glorified karaoke but as the two gents behind me were discussing as we left this show it is “affa guid”.

It includes Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers and of course, the amazing and wonderful, Dolly Parton, who stays in character the whole time.  Very talented musicians including Charlie and Paul who are brothers on drums and percussion respectively make up their band.  Amber Jackson sings a couple of songs, including Patsy Cline’s Crazy, as herself and then joined the band on guitar for the rest of the evening.  There there is also a real life “West Carolina hillbilly” by the name of David Connolly.  When he came on stage at the beginning the local gentleman beside me went “ah now here’s a laddie with a bunnet, it must be starting”. Trust the North East of Scotland to rename a Stetson!  David had an amazing voice, treating us to American Pie, and it was nice to have a real American accent included to give that touch of authenticity to the evening.

There were a couple of songs that I did not recognise but in the main they were all well known songs and towards the end we were encouraged to sing along, some people even got up for a dance.  Suzanne and her hen party were standing in their pink cowboy hats the entire night at the back of the balcony and were thrilled to get a dedication from Johnny Cash at the beginning of the second half when he sang Dance the Night Away.

For anyone that loves country music, especially if like me you wish you had seen some of these iconic stars perform in real life, this is a show that should not be missed.  It is a feel good, well presented production, with some talented musicians, that had everyone singing all the way home.
