Hells Bells at the Lemon Tree, Aberdeen

Hells Bells is an AC/DC tribute act I thought my nephew would enjoy but unfortunately he was too busy, so my son came along instead. The support band was the local rockers Fubar, although John is currently housebound so it was just Ronz (singing and playing guitar) and Cary on drums.  They performed an acoustic set, which actually worked well, although not the usual format for their usual rock songs. The response to a request for an Oasis song which included a cheese grater was maybe a bit extreme!  It was a good set of songs including various requests including Whiskey in the Jar, Motörhead’s Killed By Death, Go Your Own Way and Sweet Child of Mine. Fubar are always fun, their 25th anniversary gig in Drummonds recently was a wonderful night! Ronz has a way of engaging with the audience in a most captivating way.

Soon it was time for the main act and Hells Bells burst onto the stage, after a atmosphere building space video was played on a screen to the side of the room.  Unfortunately I was not cool enough to see AC/DC in their prime but had heard that this band was a close second best.  Lee Jay is a brilliant front man and singer for the band and we were introduced to Tom Herne for his first time as the Hells Bells drummer, with only 70 hours notice before he joined them!  The guitarist, Ayrton Lennie, in particular is incredibly talented and just kept producing magical noises, even when he was carried on the shoulders of the lead singer around the audience and back onto the stage again whilst continuing to play, without missing a note!  Now that’s Rock!

During Bad Boy Boogie Ayrton peeled off his jacket, and swirled it around, next was the tie, then off came his shirt.  I considered looking away as he went for his trousers but was relieved to see he was wearing St Andrews cross boxers!  Soon the guitar was back hiding his rather scrawny chest and we were treated to Sin City and T.N.T. with everyone shouting Oy most enthusiastically.

The audience all love Hells Bells and there was lots of pointing fingers, stamping feet and clapping hands.  I don’t know all of the AC/DC back catalogue but it was a very enjoyable night and included the hits including Thunderstruck, Let There Be Rock and Highway To Hell.  For those of us who missed the opportunity of the real thing this really is a perfect second best, and certainly a much cheaper option than some headline fans are charging these days!

Great night full of energy and enthusiasm!  From the band and audience!
