The Chronicle of the Lost Mine: The Goblin Den and the Betrayer’s Pact
As recorded in the Year of the Guiding Star, continued in the Librarium Eternum
Of the Goblin in the Trap
The adventurers ventured deeper into the wild trail, its silence broken only by the occasional rustling of leaves and the distant calls of birds. They came upon a small clearing, where an unexpected sight awaited them: a goblin, dangling upside down in his own snare.
*
This unfortunate creature introduced himself as Scab, his embarrassment palpable, his pride thoroughly wounded. Scab attempted to mask his humiliation with blustering apologies, even addressing Logan with an awkward “How’s yer arm?”—a clear reference to the earlier ambush.
*
The party, wary of deception, questioned the goblin with suspicion. Yet Scab, eager to save his own skin, revealed much:
• Two humans, presumably Gundren and Sildar, had been taken to his gang’s hideout, though their fate remained grim—Scab referred to their destination ominously as the “eating cave.”
• Dissension brewed within the ranks of his tribe. Their leader, Klarg, a hulking bugbear of immense strength, had alienated many. Scab suggested that Yeemick, the goblins’ second-in-command, might welcome an alliance to overthrow the brutish leader.
• In his rambling, Scab mentioned a shadowy figure known only as The Black Spider, though he seemed to know little of the entity’s purpose.
*
After much deliberation, the group agreed to let Scab guide them to the goblin hideout. The goblin’s hands were bound, and he was tethered like a prisoner. Logan, half-seriously, suggested keeping Scab as a pet, to which Scab replied with unamused grumbling.
Of the Goblin Den and the Pact with Yeemick
Scab led them to the entrance of the goblin hideout, a concealed spot cleverly hidden within a rocky hillside. Two goblin sentries eyed them suspiciously, but Scab convinced them not to attack, claiming the adventurers were here to “help with our problem.”
*
The party was led past a pen of snarling wolves, their howls echoing through the cavern. The air was thick with the stench of wet fur and unclean stone. At last, they reached the Goblin Den, where they found Yeemick.
*
The goblin lieutenant greeted them with disdain and a twisted smirk. Sildar Hallwinter, battered and bloodied, hung limply in his grasp. Yeemick declared that the dwarf, Gundren, had been taken elsewhere at the orders of Klarg’s boss, who considered him “very valuable.”
*
Yeemick offered a deal: slay Klarg, and Sildar would be released. Though the party was loath to trust him, they had little choice. Scab, eager to please, suggested they take a shortcut through the wolf pen.
Of the Wolves and the Approach to Klarg
The adventurers tread carefully through the wolf pen, employing both bribes of food and calming gestures to pacify the feral creatures. Selrach’ a, Hebbiwyt’s & Logan’s skill with animals proved invaluable, and the group passed without incident.
*
Navigating through the fissure that led to Klarg’s lair, they relied on Dapps’ darkvision and stealth. Unfortunately, Logan’s armour and sword clanked loudly against the stone walls, alerting the Bugbear, goblins and their wolf to their presence.
The Battle with Klarg’s Minions
The confrontation was swift and brutal. Hebbiwyt was grievously wounded as goblins rained down arrows and the wolf lunged with savage fury. Yet the party rallied, felling two goblins and the wolf through grit and determination.
Klarg, however, proved more cunning. Sensing his disadvantage, the bugbear fled deeper into the caves.
Of the Treasure and the Arrival of Yeemick
The adventurers debated their next move: to pursue Klarg immediately or investigate the treasures within his lair. Curiosity won out, and they discovered crates bearing the emblem of the Lionshield Coster, along with a modest treasure chest.
*
As they prepared to leave, their respite was interrupted by the arrival of Yeemick and a group of goblins. Bloodied and weary from a recent skirmish, Yeemick’s expression darkened as he surveyed the lair.
*
Seeing the corpses of Klarg’s minions and the conspicuous absence of the bugbear himself, Yeemick turned to the group with a sharp glare and an ominous declaration:
“Hmmmm, we have to talk.”
Thus ends the second account of their journey. The threads of fate tighten, and betrayal brews in the shadowed halls of the goblin den.
