The Mirror Crack’d at His Majesty’s Theatre Aberdeen

A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.

This adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic is by Rachel Wagstaff for The Original Theatre Company.  It has quite a star spangled cast with Susie Blake playing Miss Marple really rather marvelously, Sophie Ward is the Hollywood star character of Marina Ward and her on stage husband Jason Rudd is played by Joe McFadden.  He has aged a little since The Crow Road, but when I looked it up and realised it was out in 1996 I realised I too will have noticeably aged since then!!  I did watch it religiously because he was in it though it must be said, so it was quite a delight to find him on stage in front of me.

The set design is very clever, there is a long glass corridor which rotates to be a walkway, or a hallway in various houses.  It does look rather a weight when the actors turn it but it is very effective in helping transform the stage from Miss Marple’s house to Marina’s mansion, to the film set where Jason is directing a movie featuring his beloved Marina.  Much of the story happens as flashbacks in Miss Marple’s house as Chief Inspector Craddock (Oliver Boot) discusses a murder case with his Aunt and they work together to identify the murderer.  Is it the seemingly devoted Butler or a husband?  Well, you’ll have to go see it to find out.  There are twists and turns along the way in this brilliantly written tale of love and the sad things that life throw at us.

The play is running in Aberdeen until Saturday and there are still tickets left so its not too late to get in on the action – and I guarantee you will not regret it!
