A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.
Produced by local theatre group The Lyric Musical Society, this production of The Witches of Eastwick provides some raunchy costumes, amazing sets and some great acting. The very full cast of local people put their hearts and souls into producing a unique experience each year. It has been some years since I have watched the movie with Cher and Jack Nicholson so it is quite nice to go in not remembering the whole of the storyline. I now want to watch it again to see how close this musical version was to the 80s movies.

The lead characters were very well cast with three very different ladies and a most devilishly charming lead man. Lynsey Duncan played Alex Spofford, Victoria Cowan wonderfully transformed into Jane Smart, Janey Cooper was Sukie Rougemount and Grant Ogston was the dashing Darryl Van Horne. For me the star of the show was actually his sidekick Fidel, played by Mikey Innes who was almost like the Buttons character in a panto, just appearing occasionally and making everyone laugh. He is especially funny during the song Dirty Laundry.

The sets were very well done with a row of houses being the street of Eastwick changing occasionally with different lighting or extra props like Darryl’s big bed. The show benefited from some magical input from local magicians, Ivor and Eoin Smith, which added to the ooh factor of the performance.

I must admit to being confused by one character who seemed to just come on and read from the story of Chicken Little periodically throughout the show, without being at all relevant to what else was going on in the plot.

It’s interesting to see that, although this is a story from several decades ago, it still has some relevant themes of the power of women and the way men think they can control them. You really are rooting for the lead ladies, even when their mischief causes harm. They do seem to be having fun with their roles, and they got some fabulous costumes to dress up in as well!

This was a great, fun night out. I went with a gal pal and we had a good laugh; it is just what you need in the middle of the working week although the show is on into the weekend and it would be fun to go see it after a couple of cocktails as well. If you haven’t got tickets yet, get that sorted pronto or devil knows you’ll regret it!
