A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.

I must admit that, although it was in the title, I had not quite taken in that this was a musical. So when the first dog puppet came on to stage and the human activating it started singing it took a bit to get used to the concept. However once I did I thoroughly enjoyed the whole show. The acting was superb, the sets were fantastic and it was a different variation on the movie that I am sure most of us know and love. Different enough to be captivating and different, but not different enough to be upsetting and weird! Although there was a key character introduced which was a bit of a surprise, plus it almost stole the show for me!

The Dalmatians were all puppets and came in many different shapes and sizes, cleverly engineered to be worked by the ensemble who were singing as they carried out their puppeteer duties. The lead roles of the couple who fall in love over their Dalmatians were very well played by Jessie Elland and Samuel Thomas. The evil Cruella De Vil was played by Kym Marsh, previously of Hear’Say. She had some fantastic costumes, as well as the amazing voice which we all know. The two evil henchmen in this version are Cruella’s nephews and they added a fun comedy aspect. Again very well acted by Charles Brunton and Danny Hendrix.

The set changed smoothly: from Cruella’s office, to the couple’s house, to the park, to the pub and back again without really noticing that there was a set change going on as it was carefully orchestrated into the actors movements.

Although I did not know the songs beforehand they were also enjoyable, including the recurring Take Me Home and I hope to have an excuse to sing I Can Smell Puppy at some point in the future!

All in all it was a fabulous looking, very enjoyable show that left you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Definitely recommend getting tickets if you have not already!
