An Inspector Calls at His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen

A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.

Wow!  What a production!  The set absolutely blew my mind from start to finish, the acting was superb, the storyline a series of fascinating twists and turns.

Created from the classic thriller, which many school children study, by JB Priestley, this production really keeps its audience on its toes wondering what will happen next.  Both in the plot and with the set, which was designed by Stephen Daldry.

As the curtain rises it is raining on stage, a feat not often attempted.  There is a thick fog and music playing and as it clears we start to see the house where the inspector is to come calling.  Jackie Morrison and Jeffrey Harmer play the Birlings, an affluent couple hosting a dinner party to celebrate their daughter’s engagement.  At first the toy house they are in seems weirdly small but as the evening goes on you get used to the perspective of it and accept the wonder of the set.  Leona Allen is magnificent in the role of the daughter with George Rowlands playing her brother and Tom Chapman her fiancé.

Far from being a “fun night out” at the theatre, An Inspector Calls is far more than that, making us question the consequences of our actions.  It shows how just a small action can have such a negative effect on someone else’s life.  The inspector is really the keystone to the whole production, as the name would suggest, and certainly Tim Treloar manages this seemingly without effort.

It is one of those plays that does not answer everything and leaves us questioning a few things as we leave the theatre: about ourselves, as well as the possible life choices of the characters involved. It also left me apologising to my son as apparently I swore loudly at one of the more startling effects, which really caught me off guard, but wow what an effect!  Obviously I will not say anymore as I would not want to spoil it for anyone who has not seen it yet but I would definitely recommend getting tickets.
