Monza Express at Drummonds, Aberdeen

A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.

Last night Aberdeen was a hive of musical talent. The choices were diverse: Alison Moyet at the Music Hall, Shambolics with the Capollos at the Lemon Tree, Funky Red Pandas at The Blue Lamp, Wendel Borton in the Cellar – as well as the musical Witches of Eastwick at His Majesty’s Theatre! Meanwhile I had chosen the alternative option of Drummonds. We had Box of Trash from Ayr enjoying their Aberdeen debut, with Monza Express and Pitnamoon – both local bands who I saw supporting the awesome Holy Coves back in April. I have been following them on Twitter ever since and did not want to miss this chance to see them again.

These bands work hard on their social media hence keeping me interested. They are also frequently recommended by people who have heard their material. Each band has some great songs and are talented musicians. Tickets were only £10, which to see three live acts is a really good price. Unfortunately some people are not willing to risk an “unknown quantity” and only want to see bands when they are big and famous. These people deny themselves some jolly good nights out. All these boys put a lot of energy into their performances, they engage with the crowd and ensure everyone has a great night! I must admit missing hearing who we were singing Happy Birthday to part way through the night, which is always a little bit cheesy, but also a good way to bring all the audience together because we all know the words for that one!

Pitnamoon got things started and set the tone for the night. Although they are young and only formed in 2022 their EP ‘The Good Ones’ is well worth checking out. Next up were Box of Trash who played a brilliant set including Spaceman, Chemical Kiss and My Amelia. Hopefully they will think the train journey was well worth it, the audience certainly did.

Finally it was the turn of Monza Express to take to the stage, their set list included eleven songs, mostly their own. They ended with a cover of Paperback Writer from the Beatles, presumably inspired by their recent appearance in the much coveted Cavern Club in Liverpool where they launched their single Back of the Queue. We were treated to their newest single Nelson Street, which came out earlier this month.

The atmosphere all night was just buzzing, everyone there for a good time. I spoke to members of two other bands who had come along to support the lads, and had a great conversation with Wemyss who was working the door about the delights of supporting live music and grass roots venues.

Box of Trash have just posted on Instagram that they are home to Ayrshire safe, all the bands deserve a good sleep tonight safe in the knowledge they did themselves proud and gave their fans a great night out.
